Air fresheners are one type of consumer products that mitigate unpleasant odors in inside spaces. Air fresheners can be available in the form of candles, aerosol sprays, diffusers, potpourri, gels and mechanical or heat release products. Environment friendly air fresheners give a great chance to prove people that they can all make a contribution to saving the planet even in smaller ways. Homes are full of smells, some of them are good and some of them are not so pleasant. Aerosol sprays only mask the bad smells and also can give off something worse.


Most of commercial air fresheners are bad for health as well as for the environment. Some environmentally friendly ways are available by which you can eliminate bad and unpleasant air from home. It is tough being green and finds eco friendly ways for eco friendly air fresheners. It is not only eco friendly but also inexpensive as well. Making of own natural air freshener and organic home products is not only fun, but really easy. Nothing gives satisfaction as it is given by knowing you have done something good for yourself, your family and your environment.

Boiling activities:

To cover up odors, boiling cinnamon sticks, lemon leaves, orange leaves, lemon rinds, orange rinds, grapefruit rinds, mints, herbs, vanilla, or cloves in water is a good way and it help a home to smell welcoming and lift your mood as well as your guests mood. After boiling all cinnamon sticks, you can also drink it as tea which is the good thing about it. Boiling of cinnamon sticks can leaves your house with a cinnamon smells and your taste buds with the cinnamon flavor. You can also use boiled water as a facial steam to pamper your skin if the boiled water isn’t good for tea. Also, you can pour this water in your garden after cooling of it.

Homemade potpourri:

Natural homemade potpourri smells better that store bought potpourri and also it is healthier and more environmentally friendly. Various ways are available to make potpourri with a variety of ingredients. Such as, you can have a citrus smelling potpourri or a rose smelling potpourri.

By using older fruit from your fridge, you can make potpourri and it is a semi-quick way to make this. Slice this fruits and place them on a cookie sheet. Then, place them in the oven set at about 170 degrees F for a few hours and turn the slices over about every hour. Clean up your place. Place the dried fruit in a jar when dried. You can also add dried flowers, pinecones, cinnamon sticks or cloves to the batch and then sprinkle with essential oils of your choice to improve the fragrance of air freshener. Open the jar when freshening of air is required. Cover fruit with a bit of shellac or floor wax to preserve them. Covered fruit last for several weeks and can be hung on any door for freshen up the room.

Mix several different scents to make a dried bowl arrangement. For the visible purpose, these arrangements can be put in wooden shallow bowls or clear glass bowls. Use some natural wooden filler for beautification that are sold at most craft stores. You can also add some fresh dried herbs like mint, rosemary, or thyme.

Sprays:

By the use of natural household items, you can also make your own air freshener sprays. Good ingredients for air fresheners include cinnamon sticks, vanilla extract, ginger, almond extract, vegetable oil, citrus etc. Varieties of recipes are available to make a mixture of air freshener. Place your mixture(s) in spray bottles and label it well to use whenever you need or want. A simple mixture is a combination of water, lemon, an herb and vinegar.

Note: citrus juice on fabrics is not usually recommended. In stead of using on fabric, you can use it around the kitchen and bathroom.

Herbs:

Pick herbs and then dry it. Fresh herbs have very wonderful smell as well as taste. You can also use the dried herbs in your cooking. Boiling herbs, growing herbs and cooking with herbs creates your home smell good too.

Oils and extracts:

Onto a cotton ball, wipe essential oils or vanilla extract. Then, place this cotton ball around your home such as, in the bathroom in a small basket, in a vase of flowers etc. You can also hung this in elegant sachet which are made from recycled fabric, etc.

Other quick tips:

  • Light eco-friendly candles, beeswax candles are a natural air freshener.
  • Set out dishes with vinegar and set them out over night
  • Set out a tiny clay pots, fill with essential oils and place them where the smell remain.
