Ants like to eat leftovers so if you leave any food uncovered in the kitchen, then ants would crawl up to it. Ants discharge pheromones trails while they find food. Pheromones trails run from the ant colony to the food so other ants can easily find the food. Using chemical pesticides/sprays that contain insecticides to get rid of ants are dangerous for people and the environment so natural way is the best. Natural way is simple and cheaper compared to other ways. Let us learn some of the natural ways to get rid of ants from your kitchen.
Natural Ways to Get Rid Of Ants1) Cucumber
Cucumber is an effective remedy as ants hate the taste of cucumbers. Just put the pieces of cucumbers in ants affected area and ants will leave your home. Cucumber is toxic to the fungi so ants avoid eating the cucumber peels.
2) Vinegar
White vinegar is one of the best remedies. Spraying the vinegar in the ants affected area removes the pheromones trails as well as its odor help to get rid of ants. To kill the ants, pour vinegar directly on them.
3) Salt
Salt is very effective ant repellent which also helps to kill ants. Make a salt solution by combing salt with hot water and spray this solution on areas where ants usually thrive. You can also sprinkle salt at the corners of the kitchen and on ant nests.
4) Baby Powder
Baby Powder is one more effective remedy. Sprinkle baby powder across the spot where ants invade. Baby powder contains talcum and ants hate the smell of talcum so they stay away from it.
5) Mint
Sprinkle the powder of the dried mint leaves in the ant affected areas. You can also use mint tea bags instead of dried mint leaves. Just place them where the ants enter. Peppermint oil can be also sprayed on the ant affected areas. Smell and taste of mint can kill ants.
6) Borax
Borax is among the most common remedy to control ant. Mix borax & sugar in equal parts and put it where the ants enter to your house. Borax damages the digestive system and the outer skeleton of the ants. You can use peanut butter and honey instead of sugar.
7) Lemon Juice Solution
To make lemon juice solution, mix lemon juice and water in equal proportion. Fill the solution in the spray bottle and spay where ants are seen.
Grits
Just sprinkle grits where you see ants. When the ants have consumed grits, they will expand and kill the ants.
9) Soap
Make soap solution by mixing soap with water. Spray this mixture directly on ants to kill them. Soap breaks the waxy layer of exoskeleton of ants and dehydrates them.
10) Onion, Cayenne Pepper and Garlic Clove Mixture
Take 1 onion, 1 Tbsp cayenne pepper, 1 garlic clove and 1 qt. water. Blend all the ingredients with the help of a blender. Fill the mixture in the spray bottle and spay wherever ants are seen.
Other Natural Ways to Get Rid Of Ants
- Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the ants affected areas.
- Put bay leaves/cinnamon/cloves/garlic in the places where ants generally come.
- Spread mixture of baking soda and sugar (in equal amounts) where you find ants.
- Spraying the mixture of water, alcohol and dish soap (40%, 40% and 20% respectively) also helps to get rid of ants.
