Recycling Management in Home
Posted in Green on 04/28/2010 04:17 am by adminRecycling is one of the methods of waste management. The collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal, and monitoring of waste materials referred as Waste management. Generally, waste management is under taken to reduce the effect of waste materials on health, the environment or aesthetics. Recycling is the method, in which the used materials processed in to new materials to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction.
Common recyclable materials include batteries, clothing, electronics disassembly and reclamation, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, paint, paper, plastic and textiles. Reuse of biodegradable waste such as food or garden waste, is not typically considered recycling. An excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment is recycling. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials and 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.
As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted. Much of the waste of dustbin can be recycled and should be disposed of separately to general household waste. Rubbish bin contains much of the contents which should actually have been recycled. An insignificant amount of time required by Home recycling but it offers considerable benefit to the homeowner as well as the environment. The national recycling rate is just 30% according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
There are many benefits of using recycling products. These environmentally preservationist benefits of recycled products are as follows:
- Reduces costs
- Reduces solid waste
- Conserves energy
- Decreases pollution
- Improves the quality of waste water
- Reduces pressure on forests and the environmental impacts of commercial forestry
- Improves health standards
Recycling management in home:
For conserving natural resources, recycling is an important factor and it greatly contributes towards improving the environment. When you know how to carry out recycling in and around home, it can be very easy to carry out recycling at home. The first step towards efficient recycling is to think carefully about what products you buy at the supermarket. To manage recycling at home following points must be taken in to consideration.
Find ways of recycling different materials:
The materials which can be recycled include paper, plastic, metal and glass. Other items such as furniture, electronic equipment, building material and vehicles can also be recycled.
Buy products that can be recycled:
Buy products that can be recycled easily such as glass jars and tin cans, when shopping at the supermarket.
Buy products that have been made from recycled material:
Buy a product which is biodegradable by looking at the label on the packaging. This reduces the cost as well as saves energy.
Avoiding buying hazardous material:
Hazardous waste containing products are difficult to recycle products so avoid buying hazardous products. Buy non-toxic products whenever possible and try to find safer alternatives to household cleaners.
Recycle bins:
You should have a recycle bin in your home and keep it in an obvious place so you won’t forget to use it. Local council should be able to provide a recycle bin that can be used for materials such as glass, paper, aluminum and plastic.
Recycling in the garden:
To improve the environment in garden, recycle the garden products and planting trees.
- Composting:
- In composting process, the waste degrades into compost which can then be used in garden to help the growing of the plant. It is an excellent way to recycle garden and kitchen waste such as plant embellishments and leftover food.
- Grass cycling:
- It is the way of recycling grass cuttings after mowing the lawn. Instead of throwing the cuttings away simply leave them on the ground which will turn into nutrients and act as a fertilizer in the soil.
- Planting trees:
- To improve the environment, plant the trees in garden which helps to reduce global warming and also it provides a home for many animals.
What materials can be placed in recycling bin?
- Paper and Cardboard:
- Magazines
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Plastic-lined paper drink cartons
- Office Paper
- Newspapers
- Paperboard
- Paper Cardboard Dairy and Juice Cartons
- Unsolicited Direct Mail
- Phone Books
- Plastic:
- plastic bottles
- plastic grocery bags
- polystyrene (cups, food trays, egg cartons, etc)
- Metals:
- Aluminum Cans
- Aluminum Foil and Bakeware
- Steel Cans and Tin Cans (soup cans, veggie cans, coffee cans, etc.)
- Glass:
- Clear (Flint) Glass
- Brown (Amber) Glass
- Green (Emerald) Glass
The waste hierarchy refers to the “3 Rs” reduce, reuse and recycle. These classify waste management strategies according to their desirability in terms of waste minimization. To extract the maximum practical benefits from products and to generate the minimum amount of waste is the main aim of the waste hierarchy. So, by collecting the waste material in recycle bin you can improve environment and decrease global warming effects.
