In ancient time people used to cure their disease with the help of various herbs and some natural therapies that always proved effective. One of the most important formulas among these therapies is Chyawanprash. It is an ayurvedic herbal tonic with multiple health merits. It has been used widely in India and all around the world today as an immunity enhancer, rejuvenative and appetizer.

Chyawanprash is a complex ‘Rasayana’ derived from 2500 years old ayurvedic formula. First documented formula for chyawanprash was found in the ‘Charak Samhita,’ an Ayurvedic dissertation written by the sage Charak in the 4th century BC. As per Charak Samhita, administration of rasayana provides endurance of life, memory, health, youthfulness, vigor, brightness, improved voice, and body stamina.

Chyawanprash can be prepared in many ways with 25 to 80 herbs. Main herb in it is ‘Amla’ (Indian gooseberry), botanically known as Emblica officinalis used as a base. Other herbs are also included in the Chyawanprash such as ashwaganda, pippali, cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. All the herbs are added in the base of ghee, also called clarified butter and honey. Chyawanprash is black colored ‘elixir’ having a consistency like jam. It is healthy for all irrespective of their age and gender. 1 to 2 tea-spoons of Chyawanprash daily is enough to stay healthy. It can be taken directly, in milk or by spreading on bread. In all these cases its therapeutic properties will remain unaffected.

Chyawanprash has many advantages described below.

Strengthens Digestive and Immune System:

  • Amla, the basic ingredient of Chyawanprash contains mainly Vitamin C and Pectin. Tannin is also present in small amount in it. Tannin prevents the oxidation of Vitamin C. Pectin decreases serum cholesterol level and inhibits the platelet aggregation in blood. Amla due to rich content of vitamin C builds up immunity and reduces the occurrence of common bacterial and viral infections such as cough, cold and fever.
  • It also prevents hyper acidity in the stomach. It cleanses intestine and keeps the blood sugar to normal level. Regular intake of Chyawanprash boosts the metabolism of the body as it facilitates the absorption of food.

  • Chyawanprash is known to stimulate the cells of brain and heart to maintain the smooth functioning of them. Amla act as a cardiac stimulant that helps to improve function of heart.
