Nutmeg Health Benefits and Uses

Nutmeg is the dried seed of the nutmeg tree fruit which belongs to the genus Myristica. It is a tiny package with various big benefits. It is used for medicinal purpose and also for culinary purpose. Nutmeg is also recognized as jaiphal, myristica, muscdier, myristica fragrans, mace, noz moscada, magic, muskatbaum, nuez moscada and nux moschata. Nutmeg tree grows in Malaysia, Indonesia, West Indies and SriLanka as well as produce both nutmeg and mace. Mace is the lacy reddish membrane of the seed which is also used as the spice.

Nutmeg has strong fragrance along with sweet, savory and nutty taste like cinnamon. It is generally used in powdered form. Saponin and essential oil for example fixed oil & volatile oil are contained by nutmeg. Myristicin is also contained by nutmeg. Myristicin is a strong narcotic compound which can lead to hallucinations if taken in large quantity. The oil extracted from the herb is utilized in hair lotions, ointment, perfumery, and as an antispasmodic carminative.

Medicinal Uses of Nutmeg

Digestive Disorders:

Nutmeg helps in getting rid of diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion and hiccups as well as it improves appetite. Combine around 5 to 15 grams nutmeg powder with banana or apple juice and consume it 2-3 times a day. It is extremely effectual remedy for diarrhoea led by indigestion of food. To get rid of morning sickness, hiccups & indigestion, combine around 5 to 15 grams nutmeg powder with a tablespoon of fresh amla juice and consume 3 times a day.

To treat insomnia, combine 1/4 tsp of nutmeg powder with 1 cup of milk and bring to boil. Consume the whole cup. Combine 1 teaspoon nutmeg powder with 1 tablespoonful of honey and give this mixture to kids who cry without any reason at night. It will help to induce sleep but don’t give it daily as well as consult doctors before giving it.

Common Cold:

Nutmeg gives quick relief in common cold and chest cold. To treat running nose make a paste of nutmeg with cow’s milk and apply it to the forehead and the nose. Combine equal parts of ground nutmeg & flour as well as add egg white & a small quantity of water to make nutmeg plaster. To calm a chest cold, wrap a cotton cloth with the paste and apply to the chest.


Nutmeg also helps to treat dehydration led by vomiting and diarrhoea especially in cholera. Combine ½ nutmeg & ½ litre of water with tender coconut water and consume it in doses of 15 grams at a time.

Skin Disorders:

Nutmeg also treats skin diseases such as ringworm and eczema. Rub nutmeg on a stone slab in water and apply the paste on the skin which is affected.

Remedy a toothache:

Toothache and bad breath are also treated by nutmeg. To treat toothache, ladle two fingers of petroleum jelly on a clean cotton cloth and cover it with a nutmeg powder. Hold it against the jaw line at the point closest the painful tooth. To treat bad breath, put some drops of nutmeg oil on a cotton swab and apply to the gums around an aching tooth.

Brain Booster:

Nutmeg helps in stimulating the nervous system of the brain. It helps in easing stress and anxiety as well as encourages the mental activities. It also enhances the blood circulation to brain and boost concentration. Take it in a very small quantity because large amount can cause delirium.

Tonic for Heart:

For cardiovascular system, nutmeg proves to be an outstanding tonic as it boosts the blood circulation and fuel the heart functions. It also helps to lower the level of blood pressure.

Detoxifier for Kidney & Liver:

Nutmeg oil is an amazing liver tonic as it flushes out all toxins from the body. It dissolves kidney stones and also helps in treating kidney infections.

Pain Reliever:

Nutmeg oil contains anti-inflammatory properties so it is very helpful for relieving muscle and joint pain. Before going to bed just massage the nutmeg oil on the affected area. It will reduce pain and joint swelling. To relieve pain, neuralgic and sciatic you can also apply paste of nutmeg powder which is fried in til oil until brown. Strain the oil prior to applying the paste to the affected area.

Control Acne:

Make a paste of nutmeg powder with milk and spread the paste evenly over the acne. After 2 hours, remove the paste by using warm water pursued by cold water to close the pores. It will also work as a scrub to cure blackheads.

Culinary Uses of Nutmeg:

Nutmeg is a popular ingredient for cooking and used in various sweet and spicy dishes like baked goods, white sauces and puddings. To give a stronger and richer flavor to curries, chicken, sausage mixtures, lamb, stews and veal, black pepper is usually replaced by nutmeg. Traditionally creamed spinach, baked winter squash and Swedish meatballs are seasoned with nutmeg while hot mulled cider, eggnog and spiced wine are few drinks that are flavored with nutmeg. Nutmeg is famous topping on various unusual beverages such as the ‘Painkiller’, the ‘Barbados Punch Rum’ and the ‘Bushwacker’. Nutmeg merges very well with many cheeses and egg dishes. Nutmeg can be added to any milk-based sweet dish like hot chocolate, custards, rice pudding, etc.


Nutmeg should be taken in very small doses as higher doses can cause burning in the stomach, nausea, vomiting, restlessness and giddiness with hallucinations. Nursing mothers and pregnant women should evade the use of nutmeg. It slow down prostaglandin production and can also cause miscarriage in pregnant women. Allergic skin reaction can be caused by touching nutmeg so it should be kept out of reach of children. Before using all the remedies consult a physician as nutmeg taken in large doses can lead to hallucination.
