They are indigenous to India and Pakistan. Psyllium husk is the outer shell of the seeds from this plant that frequently ground to extract a clear, glue-like substance called mucilage. This mucilage contains a high-level of soluble fiber and other beneficial constituents that are frequently used to treat a variety of ailments. A psyllium husk was introduced to the United States as herb to relieve constipation. Psyllium husks are extremely rich source of fibers and so now they are considered as an effective fiber supplement.
Oat bran, a good source of fiber, provides about five grams of fiber per 1/3 rd cup while psyllium husk provides up to 71g of fiber for that same one-third of a cup. So, the psyllium husks are the favorite of many manufacturers who make dietary fiber supplements and powders. Psyllium husk are soluble in water and expands and becomes mucilaginous on wetting. Also, they are indigestible which makes it useful to promote healthy bowels, and other gastrointestinal functions. Nowadays, people are interested in using psyllium husk for purpose of weight loss.
Appropriate intake of daily dietary fiber can help to improve your digestive health. After the ingestion of psyllium husks, they travel through the human digestive system and absorb water and toxins. On coming to contact to water, psyllium seeds swell 10-20 times their size. This results in bulkier as well as softer stool that leads to fewer problems with passing stool. It is recommended to drink adequate amount of water if you are taking a fiber supplement. It is beneficial for those people who suffer from obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes. This really works great to create a movement. For me 1 tablespoon mixed in a full glass of water at mid-morning, and again at mid-afternoon.

Since my first post I’ve learned how to use psyllium to get the most benefits. Every morning I get up, have coffee with 1/2 a banana then walk 2 miles briskly. When done with my walk I take two tablespoons of psyllium mixed with two big glasses of water, wait 25 minutes, and then eat a breakfast of oatmeal, blueberries and non-fat milk. I drink 4 additional glasses of water during the day. That’s it. I still take it everyday for two months now and will keep taking it. I initially and easily lost a few pounds the first 3 weeks just from taking it, because it produced some heavier than normal BM’s that I figure were getting rid of old stuff in my intestines. I don’t care what anyone believes about cleansing, but for me the difference and improvement in my attitude, confidence, and over-all mental health is striking. I’m more even, and more positive. For lunch I will have 2% cottage cheese with raw oatmeal and blueberries sprinkled on top. Apples for mid- morning and afternoon snacks. Supper is a salad w/ very low cal light sesame dressing, a large helping of organic microwave vegetables from Costco, and a large helping of the lean protein I choose. Evening snack is cottage cheese sprinkled with raw oatmeal. At Xmas time I weighed myself after days of eating the holiday pigout meals and weighed 201 in my night clothes. End of january I weigh 188 naked. The difference in my thinking is profound, and now I tend to be more aware of and push away any negative thoughts as it seems and is a waste of my time now. I’m clearer, calmer, confident, and cool headed 95% of the time now.

Raw oatmeal? Now that’s a new one. You would have to drink alot more water to accomodate that plus the psyllium. If not it will cause extreme dehydration. I love my oatmeal microwaved in the morning. Sounds like a terrible way to eat oatmeal. Just my opinion.

Marcus, try raw Quaker Oats fully covered with milk and add a handful of blueberries. It’s good and doesn’t cause dehydration as there is plenty of milk–you’re adding the same amount of liquid as when cooking in water. If you take psyllium 4-6 glasses of water daily is needed.
