Generally, we forget how significant our home appliances are and as a result we overlook the fact that they also need a certain amount of care and maintenance to be in top operating condition. Taking proper care of home appliances is one of the best ways to save money as well as to prolong the life of appliances. If we don’t take proper care of home appliances, they can turn from a boon to bane. All the appliances at home need different care. Here are some tips to take proper care of home appliances.
Tips To Take Proper Care Of Home Appliances
Refrigerator and Freezer Care
- Never keep the hot foods in the refrigerator as it decreases the cooling capacity ultimately.
- Always keep the food wrapped or in a sealed container to make your refrigerator odour free.
- Keep a solution of baking soda and water in the refrigerator as it will absorb the odours.
- Defrost the refrigerator if there is more than 1/4 inch thick ice buildup in the freezer.
- Before cleaning and defrosting the refrigerator, unplug it to decrease the risk of electrocution.
- Don’t open the refrigerator doors for long time as the warm air rushing inside increases the load.
- Keep enough space between the refrigerator and the walls to provide proper air circulation around the condenser coils.
- Clean the condenser coils at back of the refrigerator with the help of a vacuum.
- Always empty the drain pan at the base of the refrigerator.
- Don’t scratch ice trays with knife and other pointed things instead put plastic mats under ice trays to remove them easily.
Electric Iron
- Never immerse an iron in water as you can get electric shock.
- Don’t iron clothes on the floor or bed, instead use an ironing board.
- Before filling a steam iron with water always disconnect it from the outlet.
- Don’t use metal polish to clean the body and the sole plate of iron, rather use a damp cloth.
- Never use iron for other purpose except ironing clothes.
- Don’t use iron if there is any damage to the cord as this can cause electric shock.
- Always keep the cord of the iron away from hot surfaces.
- Before cleaning the iron, be sure to unplug it.
Television Set
- To avoid damage, keep dust out of the TV’s vents and speakers.
- Don’t open TV set even if the plug is switch off as you can get a severe shock.
- Turn off the TV set during a strong storm to decrease the risk of catching a lightning outside.
- Put silica packages around the television set to absorb moisture.
- Never apply the fluid directly to the screen. Always apply it first on the cleaning cloth and then wipe the screen.
- To clean the screen, use window or eyeglasses cleaner and then dry it with a paper towel/soft cleaning cloth.
Microwave
- Always plug the microwave into a surge protector rather than a regular outlet.
- You should use proper size pot for cooking.
- To keep the microwave running well, clean it from inside with kitchen degreaser at least once a week.
- Clean the front of the microwave with a glass cleaner.
- To clean the microwave from inside, put a bowl of water in it and heat for 3 to 5 mins. After that remove the bowl and clean it from inside with a moist, warm cloth.
- To keep the microwave clean, always cover your food with towels.
- If the food falls while you are carrying it out of the microwave, then wipe it immediately. Don’t let the food to dry.
Mixers, Blenders and Grinders
- Always run the mixers, blenders or grinders in short intervals.
- Before lifting the blender/grinder out of the machine, wait for 5 to 10 secs.
- Always clean the blades thoroughly after using blender/grinder.
- Never plug the unit till you are ready to use it.
- Use warm water and soap to clean the mixer.
- Always keep the mixer on a hard, flat and sturdy surface.
- Instead of throwing all attachments in drawer, keep them in a designated box.
- Don’t touch or wipe the spinning blades. Always turn off the unit and wait till it stops completely.
Washing Machine
- Never put too many clothes into washing machine as it will overload the machine.
- Check and change washing machine hoses to avoid water damage.
- Never wash rubber mats in the washing machine.
- To prevent fire and save money on bill clean the lint filter which is situated near the top of the machine.
- Run the machine empty with hot water and ¼ cup of baking soda. This will make the inside of the drum clean.
- Don’t put too much detergent in the washing machine to wash clothes.
- Clean the cold water inlet daily and lint trap.
Dishwasher
- Always run it when it is full.
- Check the racks often for signs of rust and if you find any signs replace them.
- To prevent dishwasher-soap buildup, wipe the dishwasher with soapy water at least once a month.
- Before putting the dishes in the dishwasher, scrape them.
- Always clean the filters, drains and spray arms.
- Often check the gasket for damage & cracks and if you find it damaged pick out a new one.
- If sprayer is not working, just remove it and immerse in warm white vinegar for a few hours. After that, remove the debris from the holes with stiff wire or pipe cleaner.
Gas stove
- At least once a month, switch on all the burners on your stove to check whether they are working properly or not.
- Call a technician to check the gas lines when your gas stove gives yellow flames.
- Remove and clean the drip pans by scrubbing.
- Place foil under the stove top to prevent formation of mess from spills and daily use.
- Never keep the store paints, solvents and other chemicals next to the stove as they are flammable.
Air Conditioner
- Pull out the grill of air conditioner and vacuum with a brush attachment.
- Wash the filter daily.
- Clean vacuum evaporator and condenser coils thoroughly with a brush attachment.
- Clean outside compressor with a hose.
- For sufficient airflow around the entire unit, keep the plantings 1 foot away.
- Keep the compressor covered in winter season.
