Some people hate this task so much that they have completely given up using garlic. No doubt peeling those flavor-packed cloves can be a bit tricky, but there exist several different ways to get the job done effortlessly and fast. From smashing the clove with the side of a knife to shaking it vigorously between two bowls, there are many interesting techniques out there that you can use to peel those little garlic cloves easily. Using a flat knife
If you just have a couple of cloves to peel, this particular technique works really well. All you need for this technique is a chopping board and a chef’s knife.
- Take a bulb of garlic and using the palm of your hand press down firmly to separate the individual cloves.
- Remove and discard the loose outer papery skin.
- Take one clove and place it on a chopping board.
- Next, take a chef’s knife and place the flat end of it over the garlic clove. Remember, the sharp cutting edge of knife should face outward. Plus, the clove should be placed near to the handle and not in the centre of the blade.
- Then, give a quick, light hit on the middle of the blade using the heel of your hand.
- Remove the knife and you’ll find the skin has been detached from the clove.
- Now complete the peeling process with your hand. The skin will now come away easily.
Using two stainless steel bowls
This is the perfect trick to use when your recipe requires a dozen heads of garlic or more. You just need two deep stainless steel bowls of same size to peel a whole bulb of garlic in about 10 seconds!
- First, smash the head of a garlic bulb with the heel of your hand to break the individual cloves apart.
- Transfer all those unpeeled cloves into one large lightweight stainless steel bowl.
- Now invert a similar sized bowl over the top of the first bowl which contains the cloves.
- Then hold both the bowls together at their rims and simply start shaking vigorously. Continue to shake for 10-20 seconds until all cloves gets separated from their skins.
Peeling by Microwave
This is yet another simple trick you can use to peel lots of garlic cloves quickly and easily.
- Put a whole head of garlic in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds.
- Then remove it from the microwave and peel the cloves with your hands. They will slide right out of their papery skins with just a little squeeze.
The only downside of this using this trick is that it cooks garlic a bit. But don’t worry; you’ll not notice any change in the flavor or texture of the garlic.
Using a silicon peeler
You can also take the help of a silicone peeler to peel your garlic in seconds. Silicon peeler is nothing but a flexible, silicone tube which is available in most of the kitchen supply stores, and they usually cost between $2 and $5. Using this kitchen tool is damn easy.
- Place the peeler on your cutting board.
- Put the garlic clove inside the tube.
- Now press down on the tube with the heel of your hand and start rolling the tube back and forth. Make sure to apply a good amount of pressure.
- Then just turn the peeler sideways to get perfectly peeled garlic clove.
By soaking in hot water
With this simple trick, you can easily peel those little garlic cloves without crushing or bruising them.
- Break a garlic bulb into individual cloves.
- Cut off the root ends of the cloves.
- Soak them in hot water for about five minutes.
- Then remove the garlic from the water and peel the skin by hand. It will easily come off in one single piece!
