Mouth freshener is colourful sweet scented after-meal snack which helps in digestion. People in South Asian countries such as India and Pakistan mainly consume mouth fresheners. Mouth freshener is a rapid cure for bad breath. Mouth fresheners are usually prepared with anise seeds, fennel seeds, sesame seeds and coconut. Mouth fresheners are generally recognized as “mukhvas” in India where “mukh” means mouth and “vas” means smell. Mouth fresheners are also taken for medicinal purposes. They have sweet flavor because of added sugar. Chewing some mint leaves, parsley, cinnamon, fennel seed, cardamom seeds, clove, cumin seed and ginger also removes bad breath after meal. Mouth fresheners are very simple and easy to make at home. Read on to know some recipes of mouth fresheners.

Make Mouth Freshener at Home

1, Fennel Seeds Mouth Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 2 tbsp crystal sugar
  • 2 tbsp grated dry coconut
  • 1 tsp areca nut
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar coated candies

Method of preparation:

First of all heat a pan and turn off when it is very hot. Then put fennel seeds in it and spread evenly. After 1 minute take away the fennel seeds. Then mix areca nuts, crystal sugar, dry coconut and coated candies. Finally serve in a nice bowl.

2, Ginger Mouth Freshener

Ingredients:

  • Gingers (Peeled)
  • Salt
  • Water

Method of preparation:

Take few gingers and wash them. Make thin slices of ginger and soak them into plain water for around 10 mins. After that, spread the soaked slices on a tray and sprinkle some salt on it. Keep the slices in the sun for 5 days to dry. Then keep them in airtight container and use as a mouth freshner.

3, Fennel Seeds and Carom Seeds Mouth Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 100 gm fennel seed
  • 10 gm dill seed
  • 25 gm carom seed (ajwain)
  • 25 gm unshelled coriander seed (dhana dal)
  • Salt water

Method of preparation:

Take a pan and put all the seeds in it. After that sprinkle some salt water on them and roast for around 1-2 minutes. Grind all the seeds and store the powder in a bottle. Consume 1 small spoon of this mouth freshener after having food.

4, Paan Leaves Mouth Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp dried paan leaves, broken into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp green cardamom seeds
  • 2 tbsp liquorices root powder/yashthimadhu/jesthimadh
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp ‘Heera Moti’ powder
  • 1 tbsp ground clove powder

Method of preparation:

Take a pan and dry roast fennel seeds and cardamom seeds for 6 to 7 minutes. Cool them and grind into coarse powder. Put coarse powder, liquorices root powder, cinnamon powder, Heera Moti powder and clove powder in a bowl and stir well. Then store in an airtight container and serve after meal.

5, Fennel Seeds and Coriander Seeds Mouth Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fennel seeds
  • 1 cup coriander seeds
  • ½ cup seasame seeds
  • ¼ cup green cardamom seeds

Method of preparation:

Take a pan and roast all the seeds until the color changes a little or 1 to 2 minutes. Store them in a glass jar. You can add sweetener and tiny silver beads.
